BIO


Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, John earned his Bachelor of Music in Performance from Miami University, studying under Dr. William Albin. During his undergraduate years, he also performed as part of A.R. Rahman’s Unity of Light tour, collaborating with Global Rhythms under the direction of Srinivas Krishnan. In 2002, he was a member of the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps, where he studied under world-renowned percussionist Colin McNutt.
John later completed a Master of Music in Jazz Studies at Indiana University, studying with celebrated drummer and educator Steve Houghton.
For over two decades, John has been a dynamic presence in the Indianapolis music scene. A versatile drum set artist and dedicated music educator, his adaptability has earned him performance opportunities across a wide range of genres and venues. He has shared the stage with notable artists including multi-platinum singer and pianist Ann Hampton Callaway, jazz legend Melvin Rhyne (of Wes Montgomery), Steve Weakley (Funk Inc.), the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, Rob Dixon, Tad Robinson (Severn/Delmark/Rounder Records), and respected local artists Gordon Bonham and Paul Holdman.
John is the drummer and co founder of his own band, GrooveSmash, active since 2017. He also has a long-standing presence in the corporate and private events scene, performing with top Indianapolis groups including The Bishops, Living Proof, Dave and Rae, The Doo Band, Stella Luna and the Satellites, and many others.
As a session musician, John has recorded hundreds of tracks at premier studios across Indiana, including Primary Sound Studios, The Lodge Studios, Gaither Studios, Owl Studios, and Twin Mono Studios. His recent studio work includes a collaboration with acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Matt Epp.
In education, John has served as Director of Percussion at Brownsburg High School for over a decade, building a strong and respected program. His excellence as an educator was recognized nationally in 2024, when he received the Manilow Music Teacher Award, presented by Barry Manilow. He was also included as a biographical subject in Who’s Who in America (2022–2023) for his contributions to music and education.
